Celebrating Rosalia Mera
This month we celebrate the late Rosalia Mera's birthday.
- Born 28 January 1944, Rosalia was a Spanish businesswoman and Entrepreneur who co-founded ZARA in 1975 with her then husband Amancio Ortega Gaona.
- She dropped out of school at age 11 to work as a seamstress.
- She was the richest woman in Spain and the World's richest self-made woman at the time of her death.
- Mera and Amancio started their business with lingerie, bathrobes and gowns she created in their living room.
- She invested her money into causes close to her heart - a Marine fish farming group that looks for cancer treatments in products from the ocean, and a maker of a fingerprinting system for newborns.
- She ran a contest for young Jazz musicians in Spain and her Paideia foundation works to integrate people with disabilities into society.
- Mera died at the age of 69 after suffering from a brain hemorrhage
