Celebrating Rosalia Mera


This month we celebrate the late Rosalia Mera's birthday.


  • Born 28 January 1944, Rosalia was a Spanish businesswoman and Entrepreneur who co-founded ZARA in 1975 with her then husband Amancio Ortega Gaona.

  • She dropped out of school at age 11 to work as a seamstress.

  • She was the richest woman in Spain and the World's richest self-made woman at the time of her death.


  • Mera and Amancio started their business with lingerie, bathrobes and gowns she created in their living room.

  • She invested her money into causes close to her heart - a Marine fish farming group that looks for cancer treatments in products from the ocean, and a maker of a fingerprinting system for newborns.

  • She ran a contest for young Jazz musicians in Spain and her Paideia foundation works to integrate people with disabilities into society.

  • Mera died at the age of 69 after suffering from a brain hemorrhage
